The story of the liberation of Europe. The invasion of Normandy was not one single battle. Some troops coming ashore met little or no opposition. Others, on different beaches or engaged in special operations, encountered determined resistance which put the whole of the D-Day landings in jeopardy. This documentary focuses on the fiercest fighting on D-Day, with the pick of combat footage from archives around the world, film of the battlefields today and vivid, chilling first hand accounts from Normandy veterans. As well as combat on the beaches, this documentary features many of the perilous support operations where, despite often terrible losses, Allied troops somehow managed to seize their objectives. It was their heroism and self-sacrifice which, ultimately, made D-Day a success. Engagements featured on this DVD include:
