Follows the action from start to finish. It is not a pretty story, and the greatest tragedy of it is that -- as the author points out -- if the American commanders had given proper attention to the dams on the Roer River at the southern end of the forest, and captured or demolished them at the outset, most of the terrible combat might have been averted.
