North Australia Observer Unit (2000) By Dr. Amoury Vane

The history of a secret unit of mounted troops formed to keep surveillance on the vulnerable coastline of Australia during WWII. According to Lieutenant-Colonel W.E.H. Stanner, the unit was formed along the lines of a Light Horse Regiment but with "commando-type flexibility". The 500 men and their Aboriginal guides were dispersed between Wyndham in the West and Cape York in the East and once they took up their field stations, most never again assembled as troops, companies, or squadrons and never as a single Unit.

They were expected to shadow the enemy - if it landed - and only attack if guerilla tactics proved an advantage. The men spent months exploring and patrolling the remote outback, and though the invasion never came, the men coped with false alarms, lack of training, and harsh conditions.
