Infantry Uniforms: 1742-1855 Bk. 1: Including Artillery and Other Supporting Corps of Britain and the Commonwealth (British Uniforms in Colour) (1972) By R & C Wilkinson-Latham

This book recreates an era when the scarlet of the British soldier came to be known and respected throughout Europe, when the single shattering volley broke the Imperial Guard at Waterloo: an era, too, which still had something of the chivalry of the middle ages when the regimental colour was carried into battle and defended against all odds. Often badly fed and equipped (as in the Peninsular Campaign), these were the men who fought a bitter rearguard action all the way across Spain and at the same time inflicted several crushing defeats on an enemy of vastly superior strength through their courage, endurance and pride in their regiment. Jack Cassin-Scott, the illustrator, pays a pictorial tribute to these men of the Infantry in 96 pages of authentic and accurate colour plates. Each plate is complete with a close-up of some item of equipment, and these plates, together with the detailed text, provide a book of military interest and historical reference.
