 The battles included in this volume have been chosen because they were recognized at the time as being important, and still considered so today. In this book, there is a balance between land, sea, and air operations, and between the different theaters of war. Strictly speaking, some of these battles should be viewed as campaigns because of their duration and intensity. Even specific battles such as Imphal Or Cassino took place over several weeks, even months, while others such as the Battle of the Atlantic or Singapore involved a number of engagements which eventually, taken together, resulted in a decisive outcome.
