Day of the Trumpet (1943) By David Cornel Dejong
This story is an insightful look into the lives of an extended Dutch family, their German and Jewish neighbors in Davendam on the cusp of the German invasion. The family, some in town, some in the country are merchants, soldiers and farmers. We witness the news and events that no one wants to believe is happening, while life goes on as usual; an old time Dutch wedding with great folk-lore with ritual acting of Gnomes blessing the bride and groom and, later skating on the canals. This is an intense story that ends at the bombing of Rotterdam at the beginning of the occupation. David De Jong's family came to the US earlier than the war.
